Reminder: ICD-10 testing begins this summer

In conjunction with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Providence Health Plan and all major payers will convert to the new ICD-10 coding system on Oct. 1. To make the transition as smooth as possible, it's important to plan ahead.

All Providence Health Plan applications will be ready for end-to-end formal testing by this summer. We'll be testing with all clearinghouses and trading partners we do business with and all providers who submit to those partners. This includes processing the “837” claims they send and providing an “835” remit to the clearinghouse.

As a reminder, claims that do not use ICD-10 diagnosis and inpatient procedure codes on or after Oct. 1 cannot be processed. It's important to note, however, that claims for services provided before Oct. 1 must use ICD-9 diagnosis and inpatient procedure codes. To learn more, read Providence Health Plan's FAQs or visit CMS's ICD-10 website. CMS's new eHealth University offers several resources to help providers comply with the new coding system.
