A woman's body is as beautiful as it is complicated. Behind the curves and contours lies a complex system that deserves your attention and care. Certain health issues are specific to women's bodies: cervical cancer, pregnancy, female reproductive challenges. Other issues aren't just challenges for women, but are typically more prevalent in them, such as breast cancer and osteoporosis. And heart disease, though an equal-opportunity offender between men and women, takes more women's lives each year — likely because women's symptoms are atypical, and many women just don't know what to watch for. These are not the only health issues that women face, but these are the most commonly experienced — and also, sometimes, the most commonly ignored.

Know your body, know your risks

Your health is important to us. We encourage you to speak with your health care provider to find out what screenings are appropriate for you based on your age and family history. Heed their advice. Know the state of your breasts, your cervix and your heart. Listen to your body, and when something seems off, don't let it go. Take a women's wellness class to better understand your body and mind. We enthusiastically embrace prevention, but we have amazing resources and expertise if you find yourself on the other end of the health spectrum — sick and in need of treatment.

Knowing your risks — just by virtue of being a woman, and also, based on your family history — is a good first step toward practicing the right kind of prevention for you. We know life is busy and that it's easy to get swept up in the stream of life — forgetting, sometimes, to do the things we know can keep us healthy and, also, give us peace of mind.
