The full force of the specialty drug tsunami on pharmacy cost trends may be reaching the shores of the health care system, despite our sustainable progress in managing the costs of traditional drugs. These drugs used by 0.5 percent of members now account for over 25 percent of total drug spending in the commercial market. Expected continued growth, the emergence of more widely effective specialty drugs and their high per-person costs will continue to build upward pressure on pharmacy trends – significantly challenging the industry to address during the next 10 years.
Join David Robertson, RPh, senior pharmacy manager with Providence Health Plan, where he will:
- Briefly review Providence's current strategies that work to achieve one of the region's lowest pharmacy cost trends
- Discuss key drivers and industry players behind the increasing utilization of specialty drugs
- Give examples of the cost and prevalence of specific new drugs for treating conditions like hepatitis C
- Highlight overall management strategies we've developed to respond to this situation
From this forum, you'll understand how to better incorporate these trends into your benefit planning to balance pharmacy costs relative to your overall benefit spend, and anticipate new demands from employees.
